Can I just use a CD to save information from my computer?
-
I need to save information from my computer. I saw that staples sells CD-R disks (which I'm assuming stand for CD rom). Well... I don't know if I have what I need to start saving info from my computer. My computer has the standard CD thingie that opens and you can put a CD disk in it for music and it plays music. But is that CD thing the same that you can put a CD rom in to save data from your computer??? I also heard that you need a "CD BURNER"... WHAT'S THAT AND HOW DO I GET ONE???? My computer also only has like 40 MB left (just 40 MB)... so I need to save all the info on my computer to reboot. PLEASE HELP... Do I have what I need to start saving information to a CD-R (a CD rom?) or do I need other stuff including more memory on my computer? PLEASE HELP :(

Answer:
First, CD-R stands for Recordable, which means you can write stuff to it. Second, to figure out if your computer can write to a CD-R, look on the CD drawer (the 'thingie' that comes out and you put a cd on). There should be am imprinted logo that says "compact disk". Underneath that little logo, if it says "rewritable" or "recordable", then you have a "cd burner" and can write to CD-R's or CD-RW (rewritable). If not, you will need to buy a CD Burner. They are pretty cheap these days. You can probly get a cheap USB CD burner for $20 - $40 USD.

Well if your CD DRIVE is a CD-R/W (cd read/write) that means you can burn information to discs. If you can insert a blank disc and copy files from your computer on to the empty disc folder. You cannot re-write disc unless it specifically says you can.

You must have a disk drive that is more than just a "cd player," you must have a CD Burner. This is a drive that reads and writes to CD's. Today's drives are mostly combo drives, they read/write CD's and DVD's both. And a CD-R does not mean cd rom, it means a CD that can only be written on one time. CD-RW means a CD that you can write on over and over. You obviously don't know what this is all about, and are in prime condition to be taken for a cleaning by a sharp and crooked tech. There are good ones, there are ones that will take the fillings in your teeth if you give them a chance. Please get off the internet and get on the phone. Call for prices, call for estimates, meet them in person if possible. Only when you are completely satisfied do you make the plunge and buy a CD burner and the CD's.
