What is a good IT career path?

What is a good degree/career path that involves computers?

  • i really like working on computers, and i want to get into that as a career.Like, helping to fix them and update them and stuff. So what kind of career would offer this, and what should i pursue a degree in to help me get there?

  • Answer:

That would be technical support. It's the entry level position of the IT industry so it's not going to be very high paying and it's not very prestigious if that's all important for your definition of a "good" job. You have to put up with "dumb" users and after a while will be really repetitive when users keep doing the same thing over and over again to mess up their computers. If you're going to get a computer science degree, you're not going to be doing technical support. There are different paths in IT to take, going into programming, networking, or other things. If you want to be putting things together and fixing them, I'd suggest being a System Administrator. You'll need lots more knowledge in networking and enterprise systems, not individual desktop computers. It's very high pay, very much in need, and very much respected. But expect to be on call 24/7 since you will be responsible whenever anything in the system goes down. You WILL be called in the middle of the night and get things fixed immediately.
