How can I permanently delete files from my hard drive?

I googled this and found out how to permanently delete files if you haven't deleted them already. However, I have already deleted these files from everywhere on the computer I could find them. Now that I've already deleted them, how can I permanently delete the files from my hard drive so that they can never be found? Don't worry it's nothing illegal, just private documents I don't want anyone to get a hold of, not even a computer specialist.

Answer:
Edwin is right, CCleaner can be used to wipe the free space only which would include the space you just deleted the files from. There is an option to wipe it 1, 3, or more times for security purposes. It will take quite some time though if you have a lot of free space. Overnight would be good.

CCleaner, it's freeware, it works great. Use the 'Drive Wipe' tool. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download Go to the bottom of the page and download the portable version under 'Builds' so you can use it on your pc, laptop, etc.
