I want to copy file names (text) from 'list view' into a word processing document without copying actual files
-
From MS windows xp's list view of files I would like to have that list of file names in a specific word processing document. How do I copy the list (the text) without copying the actual files?

Answer:
Open up Word - Then bring up list of files - Then you need to hit the Print Screen button on your keyboard (some keyboards are holding down ALT and hitting Prt Sc and others are holding down Fn and hitting Prt Sc) then go to Word and hit Paste and you will take a picture of the screen and paste it into Word. Now its just a picture in Word so right click on it and go to Format Picture to modify it. Go to Layout tab and click on Infront Of Text so the picture will float around the Word document easily. Also you can crop off the rest of the screen to only show the file list if you like in the Picture tab.

The way I'd do it would be to call up a command prompt (click Start, Run, and type "cmd" into the box). Navigate to the appropriate folder using DOS commands, then type DIR to bring up a list of the files. Then right-click in the command prompt window and choose "Select All". Then hit "enter" to copy the text ot the clipboard, and you can paste it into whatever application you choose. This will even capture things that have scrolled off the screen, so you only have to do it once.

this little standalone freeware app will create a list of files in text form (it doesn't install, you just put it on your drive somewhere and run it): http://home.a03.itscom.net/tsuzu/programing/en/ note: I usually make a folder in C:\ called "Utilities" for these types of programs. _

Do a screen print and paste it into your document. You may want to crop it first.
