If there really is something like downloads to make the computer go faster then i think the computer industry will probably be bankrupt now :P

There are some good free programs that can help. Try ccleaner and defragler. Just do a google search for them and you can easily find the download site. Ccleaner can be used to clean up the registry, clean unused files from your hard drive, tune up services, clean out the internet cache plus many more things. Defragler is used to defragment the hard drive and seems to do a more thorough job than the windows built in defrag program. If you really want to speed up your computer then you should do a complete wipe of the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. You will need all your installation cds and driver cds. Most drivers are included on windows and if you know the manufacturer of the device you need drivers for then they can be downloaded. Make sure to back up all files you want to keep on a separate hard drive or optical disc.

I would say you first of all scan your system with any good system cleaner such as Reginout to clean your system of excessive data that gives errors and cause slowdown. Also, uninstall unnecessary programs. I hope your problem will be solved. Few more steps will also help you: 1. Make Sure Your Hardware is Sufficient: Above and beyond everything you can do with software to optimize the function of your computer, making sure you have the proper hardware to support Windows is critical. 2. Clean Your Desktop: Is your Windows Desktop dotted with files? Have you noticed that your computer has been running slower and slower? Do you see the hard drive light often flashing while you wait for the computer to respond to an action? There are steps you can take to fix it. Read this article. 3. Scan Your Windows System for Errors: An operating system is a collection of files that perform different functions. It is possible, over time, that one or more of these system files has changed or become corrupted. If this happens, the speed of your system may decrease. By using a utility called “System File Checking”, it will inspect these files and correct any problem it finds. 4. Scan for Viruses, Spyware and Adware: Every Windows computer is vulnerable to viruses. Viruses are nasty little programs that cause both major and minor problems for users. Spyware and Adware are programs created by companies to find out more information about customers, so they can better market products to them. Spyware and Adware can load into computer memory and slow it down.Periodically scanning and removal of Viruses, Spyware and Adware is a great way to improve computer performance. 5. Uninstall Unused Programs: Over time, you may have accumulated programs on your computer that you do not use. When a program is installed, it creates connections between the program and the operating system. Even if you don’t use these programs, they can slow down your system. If you have the original program’s installation disk or file, removing programs will free up space on your computer and may speed up your system's performance. 6. Adjust Visual Effects for Better Performance: Windows provides a number of interesting visual effects including animated windows and fading menus. If you do not have enough operating memory (see above number 1), these effects can slow down your computer. Adjusting or reducing visual effects can make a difference. 7. Don’t Automatically Start Programs: Programs use operating memory (RAM, also called system resources). Unless you always use these programs, you can keep them from loading at Windows startup and speed both the booting of your computer and its performance. Manage startup programs using reginout. 8. Defragment Your Hard Drive: The more information and programs you have on your computer, the more it is likely that Windows has placed parts of the same file in different locations on your hard drive. It may do this for hundreds of files and programs, depending on how much space is available. Defragmenting the hard drive places all information for each file in one place. The result can be a faster computer experience.
Probably the best thing you can do is save any data from the computer, reformat it and install something like Windows XP (Vista or 7 will not run properly, even XP may not work very fast) or a version of Linux. Ubuntu is the most popular but I use Fedora on some of my computers. You can get various versions of Linux from http://www.livecdlist.com/ or http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major If you want to try and reuse your existing computer then... Uninstall any programs you no longer use Write your files (pictures, audio, movies, documents etc.) that you're not using to CD, DVD, USB drive or an external disk Close the programs that start when your computer does that you don't use. If you hardly ever use them then uninstall them. Defrag your hard drive - no need to do this very often, most drives are big enough and fast enough defragging need only be done occasionally Download Ccleaner - http://www.piriform.com/ - or run Disk Cleaner (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) and remove all the stuff you don't use (temporary, files, cached files, logs) Also in Ccleaner clean your registry Keep your Windows updated Dump whatever antvirus you're using and install Microsoft Security Essentials - http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ It generaly runs faster and uses less resources than most other antivirus programs - depending on your OS you may not be able to use this If possible add more RAM. This is the single most bang per buck thing you can do to increase the life of your computer. Use the scanner tool at http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx to see what type and how much you can use - again, your dad my be more willing to pay for this rather than an entire new laptop Also see http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx http://askbobrankin.com/make_windows_xp_run_faster.html If you're technically minded then install a new motherboard, processor and RAM. You can pick up a new m/b and processor for $80 - $90 from http://www.newegg.com/store/category.aspx?Category=20&Tpk=motherboard RAM will probably cost $50 - $70. Those are the main components of a computer system. Everything else, hard drives, CD/DVD burners etc. can be upgraded later. One thing about hard drives, some of the newer m/bs only support SATA drives not the IDE ones that are probably in your old computer. In the end you may just end up using the case, power supply and monitor from your old system.

It's a 10 year old computer - that's 20 computer generations old. (That's like a 500 year old person. Ever see a 100 year old person who was as fast as he was when he was young?) To run current software the CPU has to be a LOT faster than CPUs were back then. Replacing the CPU means replacing the motherboard. Replacing the motherboard means replacing the RAM. By the time you';ve done all that (assuming you do it yourself and don't have to pay for labor) you've spent more than a new decent computer would have cost you. There's no way you can make a 10 year old computer run as fast as a 1 year old computer, except by removing the 10 year old parts and replacing them with 1 year old parts. No software (free or otherwise) will make a 600MHz single core CPU run as fast as a 3GHz quad core. (The difference is like a snail and a cheetah. Adding RAM won't do it - that would be like adding claws to the snail. And all the cleaning, not running background programs, etc., would be like adding racing stripes to the snail. It's still going to be a snail. Don't waste your money or effort. Buy a decent $400 computer. (ASUS and Gateway make some good ones.)

Maintaining your computer 1. Left click on C drive> properties/run windows disc cleaner 2. Download Ccleaner from here: http://www.filehippo.com/ 3. Install Ccleaner and run the cleaner top left, then run the registry cleaner below it on the left. you don’t need to backup the registry 4. Left click on C drive> properties>Tools>disc scanner or in the case of Vista it’s called something else, but it’s the top tab you click on> Prompt the scanner to scan upon next reboot and REBOOT COMPUTER) #(Prepare to wait up to an hour)# 5. After Disk scan/Disk check has finished run windows Disc Cleaner again, Ccleaner again and registry cleaner again. 6. Then you must do a DEFRAGMENTAION of C drive which is START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>TOOLS>DEFRAGMENTATI…

Try changing your browser. Mine was running slow on MS Internet Explorer, until I changed it to Google Chrome; noticeably faster! And it didn't cost a thing.
