Answer:
I bought an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop for under 1k. I got the highest-end version of the dv6, with 8 GB of RAM (so it does have more RAM than average), and an 8 core (quad physical) Intel i7-2630QM CPU @ 2001 MHz (x64). So it's a pretty high-end computer. I don't know about desktops though, because I only own a laptop.

You should get a Mac. The 15 inch MacBook Pro with a speed of 2.4 GHz costs $1200 and lets say it needs $550 in maintenance, programs, etc. ; and lasts on average 4-6 years, and a PC 15 inch 1 GHz costs $600 + $200-300 for maintenance and lasts 2 years, the Mac is about $291.67 - 437.50 a year, where the slower, weaker PC costs about $400-450 dollars per year. The stronger, faster Mac is approximately $12.50 - 108.33 cheaper in the long run.

I assume you don't want to spend the time and hassle to figure out a custom system. And since you want RAM, your best bet is a major manufacturer that likes to include RAM in pre-built systems. So, a good choice for you would be HP. Dell has All-in-Ones in your price range, but they all have 4gb of RAM and it will be expensive to upgrade. Btw, consider delaying your purchase until Windows 8 theoretically comes out later this fall. Here's an HP All-in-One system for $799. Comes with i5, 6gb RAM and built-in 21.5" 1080 HD monitor. Please note, this is NOT a touchscreen computer. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=All-in-One+PCs&series_name=220xt_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/All-in-One_PCs/220xt_series Here's another All-in-One for $799. This IS a touchscreen computer, but the trade-off is a quad-core AMD processor. Still has 6gb of RAM and an even bigger 23" 1080 HD monitor. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=TouchSmart+PCs&series_name=520z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/TouchSmart_PCs/520z_series Neither system will be able to handle more than very casual or social media gaming, but you can internet browse, check email, play video and word process, etc...everyday tasks. The first system will be able to handle more robust tasks with greater ease like photo/video edit or something. As the faster system, it probably has a tad longer useful life as well. The second system can still do the complicated stuff, but slower. The trade-off is that its bigger, and with a touchscreen, it's a little more accessible and friendly. Now, if you want a more high performing system with even more RAM, then your best bet will likely be the Pavilion HPE h8z desktop. It costs $799 and comes with an AMD 8 core, 8 gb of ram, an entry-level graphics card and a blu-ray player. Not bad at all for the price. It's a decent low-end starter system for someone trying to do work as a professional. If it were $50 cheaper it would compare well price-wise to a custom built system with equal specs, assuming brand new and not refurbished parts. Unlike a custom built, this would come with HP's warranty. It does NOT come with its own monitor. This should be able to handle casual games...most MMO gaming and such. You can also hook up a 2nd monitor to this system if multi-tasking is important to you. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=h8z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/High_performance/h8z_series I assume you want to spend ~800 including taxes, shipping and handling. So, after you place any system in the cart, type "save25hp" into the coupon code area to get an extra $25 off. It should come to about $840 including tax and shipping. If you want to spend even less, then call HP on the phone and try haggling down their sales rep. You might be able to get pretty close to $800.

Ok, first off i am not going to tell you get windows. you already explained you do NOT want a mac (although someone went on about the pros of mac and cons of PC-pretty biased not giving PC any pros, and mac any cons but still). Next as one of the first answeres said, it does depend on how you want to use it prominately. if gaming, yes buy parts and someone already offered for a tutorial. If for business or NOT gaming, i'd say any small, netbook (mini laptops) that are at a start under 400$ would do, because you can request better parts (which ups the price) as in faster processor, more ram bigger hard drive (if need be) etc. Hope this helps. PS staples/walmart (if avail in your area, if not go online) have cheap models, that start around 2 or 300 ea/ so after upgrading you probly would end up investing 700+/- AT MOST but keep in mind this path is not for a gaming laptop. hope this helps.
0.o You got a good sum of money for a gaming machine. You should build one yourself for the highest performance and lowest price.
