Need an microsoft EXCEL expert.....need to search for duplicates phone numbers in EXCEL?
-
I have about 400 phone/fax numbers in an Excel spreadsheet. I can figure most things out in Excel, but can't figure out how to search for duplicate phone/fax numbers. All numbers are in the same column. Thank you in advance for your help!

do CTRL-F, and put the number in then search. Or go to the column, and sort by that number. It will find duplicates.

okay sort the whole sheet by the phone number col... go to the farthist colomn and put in an "if then" state ment something like if a1=b1 then x if not o. copy that down the length of the col. everywhere you have an x you will have a duplicate.

Highlight the column, then select DATA - SORT. Any numbers that are the same will be directly above and below each other. You can then choose however you want the list organized and filter that column (IE: last names) to rearange your spreadsheet once you are done.

I think it is quite easy- Just highlight the clumn by clinking on column header. Goto data>filter and set up filter. Then you can select one value and if it shows two rows with same value, u gotit.

I think you could use the mode function repeatedly which would give you the value which occurs the most frequently.

put auto filter on the headders and it will give you a list of all of them them select the ones you want to check and count the ones that come up when you select that number. auto filter is found on the data poart of the toolbar at the top of the page it can be a little longwingded, i know ive just made spreadsheets for 3 years worth of pupils at the college i work at and this tool i v useful

Could try a pivot table - set it up with "count" as data on the column and you should see a 2 against any duplicated entries. Only helps if the duplicated numbers are exactly the same format - watch out for spaces etc. OR Sort on the number col as others have suggested, then Conditional Format so that any number the same as the one above has a different colour font. Before you start, put in a temporary count column so you can unsort again later.
