Here are some guidelines to being a better salesman period. Once you know how to sell well, you will be able to sell anything not just computers. 1. Always look and act professional. Always dress sharp, a shirt and tie at least, and a suit if it is a nice one. Always wear shoes you can shine. Customers are going to give a salesman that looks sharp more attention and trust. It also shows them that you have your act together. 2. Always know more than your customer. Ask other successful salesmen for tips, read articles, attend trade shows, read books, etc... Don't show off your knowledge, but be ready for anything they are going to throw at you. Example: They might ask, "when is the new 4x laptops coming out" you had better know. Be careful though, because you don't want to lie to them. If you don't really know, just say "let me find out" and go ask. 3. Know the merchandise you are selling better than everyone else. Study your competition in the store(other salesmen) and out of the store(other businesses) 4. Never attempt to sell anything to anybody. Listen to your customer and respond to their needs. If they say they want the 4x, don't show them the 3x, unless they ask for what you suggest. Great salespeople listen and respond to their customers needs. Bad salesman try to sell stuff to people that they don't need, and usually end up having it returned. 5. Work on confidence all the time. Confidence needs to be maintained, or it is easily lost. Try these ideas: Attend seminars on selling: "Dale Carnegie" and "Tom Hopkins" have great seminars. If you are not able to do that at least read three books, that you can get from the library :" 5 Steps To Professional Presence: How to Project Confidence, Competence, and Credibility at Work" by Susan Bixler and Lisa Scherrer Dugan, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie, "How to Master The Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins Like any other professional in sports or business you need to have a uniform, to practice all the time, and invest in yourself to be the best. Your client is on a fact finding mission. if by chance you bump into a gullable client, you can do the comparison shoping for him. Make deals if you are authorized to make them. 5. Respect the client. if you don't respect him, respect his buying power- especially if you are on comission.

knowing what the computer comes bundled with helps, the spec of the computer would also help, internet, virus and spyware knowledge would be a good area to know about. What peripherals are compatible with the computer and also when to spot a dumb customer with no computer knowledge so you can sell them that crappy computer that has been hanging around for years that no one wants.

Know about not just the computers but the peripherals and how to suggest and add them, as well as software to the machine sale, that you think they may be interested in.
