How much is the DVD capacity?

How can we write 8.9GB of data (1 software) onto a Single DVD drive of 4.7GB capacity.?

  • I saw a DVD having 4.7GB capacity written on its label and having 8.9GB of data (Windows Vista Ultimate) in it. Tell me how can we do this? Please answer only if you know this and do not give absurd answer coz i've personally seen this. I suppose there should be some way to do this either a software which makes this possible or way to write onto a DVD. Please Answer.....

  • Answer:

The info on the DVD is compressed in .CAB files which are smaller but not runable programs until decompressed. When it is installed to the harddrive they are opened and decompressed making them usable programs. Some other file compression programs are WinZip, WinRAR and the old PKzip.

You need dual layer capable DVD writer and correspondingly double layer DVD media. If it says 4.7 Gb capacity, it will not work for you.

dual layer, records on both sides of the CD

Those individuals may be using a double density DVD which doubles the size of the DVD. You may also try a dual layer DVD. But you need a burner that can do that. Here is a link of information that describes the DVD formats. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdformats.htm

if what you want to burn is personal data, then 'walker13' got it right. if you want to burn some of your 'home made' movies, use dvd shrink.

Dual Layer recording allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data, up to 8.5 Gigabytes per disc. it's all in the recorder ... it works in xp as well

Winrar or Winzip can make almost any file into a much smaller file by 'compressing' it. And then someone with Winrar or Winzip can then 'Decompress' the files, turning them back into their original format. Windows Vista probably has some sort of Unzipper built in, in case people who want to install the OS don't have an OS currently or no internet access to acquire Winzip.
