Why won't yahoo messenger work on my computer??

I have Linux on my computer. I have tried the yahoo messenger and it doesn't work. Will a new one be coming?

  • The messenger for linux doesn't work at all. It keeps shutting down and although yahoo is my favorite messenger I can't have it on my comp now. So is there a new one coming out soon that is updated? I know that people are working on windows messengers that are strong but there are more and more linux users and we need a good messenger too. So like I asked before...when is a new one that actually works coming out that works on linux?

  • Answer:

You can find a slightly newer version (1.0.6) at the link below; it was compiled by a Yahoo employee, though not a member of the Messenger team. (Note that it's a bare binary, so you'll need to install the "official" 1.0.4 version first, then overwrite or move aside the old ymessenger.bin file. You may also need to create a libgtkhtml.so.0 symlink in the lib directory, pointing at the existing libgtkhtml.so.6 binary [i.e., "ln -s libgtkhtml.so.6 libgtkhtml.so.0"]. Ugly and manual, but it's safe enough, and it works fine.) Other than that, your best bet is GAIM or Kopete or similar, as the other respondent suggested. The sad fact is that there does not appear to be any official support for or interest in the Linux client, and apparently even the Mac client is supported only sporadically.

I think you might want to give Gaim a try. It's a cross plattform Instant Messenger program, built on top of the Gnome Toolkit (GTK). I use it on Windows, it runs nicely since there are ports of both the GTK and Gaim itself for Windows, but I have also tried Gaim on *NIX platforms in the past and it's even better than on Windows since it feels more "native" (despite the fact that the UI is skinnable and that there is a "Windows skin" available for XP, I don't use it, ha!) As for when the "official" version might be released, I have no idea, I'd just switch to Gaim. I think you'll like it.
