Extreme Email Abuse & Harassment : Please Help?
-
For the last two years a cousin of mine in Canada, her husband and me (I'm in UK) have been receiving on-going abusive emails from a hacker. We have all had to change email accounts a number of times but he always manages to catch up with us. He will send emails from their accounts and try and build up conversations with me or will send emails between my cousins trying to break their marriage. The hacker has always intimated they know me but we all think this is just further mind games. As this generally happens with hotmail accounts, we have been contacting the abuse teams and they delete the hackers accounts but the next day he just creates a new one so we are going round in circles. As MSN don't seem to do anymore than delete email accounts is there someone I can contact to stop this hacker ? Can I go to the Police or is there an organisation that can help ? Sensible answer only please, this is a serious question.

Answer:
Hello, (ANS) YES! this is a tricky subject area and a tough one to deal with when you have someone who gets off on playing mind F**ck games with your head. This hacker enjoys knowing he can upset or enrage you (all of you!!). Here is my advise:- No.1 Change ISP completely and don't give out your email address to anyone else other than close family or close friends. No.2 DON'T use mail services such as HOTMAIL or MSN or AOL, & DON'T use online mail services or web based email services. No.3 ALL x3 of you must NOT repeat must NOT!! EVER reply or respond in any way to the hackers emails this is exactly what he or she wants you do. NOTE: The more you energy you give to this hacker the more they will pursue you (all of you) and the opposite is also true. The less energy you all give it and the less you respond, the faster they will give up. ***TIP:- ALL three of you MUST just delete ALL emails from this hacker. The more all three of you don't respond the better. The hacker should be given a collective cold shoulder or silent treatment. If they cannot get anything back from any of you then they will quickly give up, in most cases this does work. It may take a few weeks possibly a month or more but it will work eventually. Trust me this is true!! **Only use POP3 email services with your new ISP and you could also try using encrypted emails between all three of you. I highly recommend using something like PGP (pretty good privacy) **PGP is free-ware of personal use and involves using a key system but its virtually unbreakable encryption so ALL you emails are secure and cannot be read by even the most determined hacker. **A quick web search using Yahoo or google should find you PGP quite easily. Try searching on "PGP" or "pretty good privacy" that should get it for you. **YES! you can try reporting it to the police but my guess is they wont be interested, nor will the ISP if this person just opens & closes accounts that quickly. **Use an ISP that this person (hacker is unlikely ) to have ever heard of, so dont choose a well known ISP. Try choosing different ISP's too so that non of you are using the same that will certainly make the hackers life MUCH harder. **You need to use a bit of reverse psychology to get rid of this hacker. this is someone you know get the law onto it you need to keep a diary of everything that happens. Written in a diary gives weight as evidence. Verbal recounts not much weight

something like this happened to me in the past it turned out to be my ex boyfriend stirring up trouble he went to unbeleivable lengths to cause problems for me and then pretended he was the victim after going thru the usual channels and msn deleting accounts that they could prove sent abusive mails etc. I relised it was actually the person i trusted most that was orchestrating the entire fiasco. Yes he is a psycho! Why dont you try a different mail accound like yahoo or google. Yahoo operate a new security service worth a try. Other advice is take a long hard think about things and be aware the perpetrator is potentially someone you know. MSN should be able to tell you where to go security wise if you want to take things further. Be careful, remember ANYTHING you do on the internet is NOT private.
Reading your info I come to the conclusion that it is someone you know.

FIRST go to your local police and tell them what is going on, they may have, or will now, where to turn next. THEN follow their instructions.

I were you i would go to the police, they might be able to track the person. As this is seroius and really annyoing to it to go for two years, and you have tried everything, i would go to the police they will beable to adivse what to do. Back everything up on a hard drive and keep all e mails safe, if you have Microsoft Outlook you can do a back up of your e mails. This is definately somthing you should tell the police about.

have you tried an email account with someone like orange, or google? If they can still hack then it could be they know you and your password. Otherwise why would they keep insisting to harass you? They will get kicks if theysee the damage they are doing. Have you changed your password? Yes you would have a case if the emails are menacing and the police could trace them. But if a hacker is in our computer maybe you may need to buy a new computer then change passwords etc. or if this is out of the question, Stop all email accounts for say 3 months ( a pain I know) then hopefully they will get bored. good luck

You can filter out his messages in any POP3 client (and almost all web clients) or add them to your spam filter. Best thing about that way is that he doesn't even know that you aren't getting his messages, so he won't change addresses. If he should change addresses, a single click will add the new address to the filter usually. Problem solved?

The Police will simply say "We can't do anything unless the hacker tries to physically attack you" -- they don't want the paperwork There are no other organisations that can help -- they all just go back to the Police I've had a very similar problem to this before, and really there is very little anybody is willing to do. I eventually got rid of the hacker by simply not using email anymore and ignoring them, but if that is not an option for you... have you tried a different email service like Yahoo? The only thing I can think of is to either keep insisting that MSN do *more*, or just stop giving the hacker the attention he desperately wants
I would have both of your computers thoroughly checked for bugs - he's getting hold of your emails somehow. I would phone your local police and report it to them and keep copies of the emails. If they cant help they will probably know who can. Other than that I cant think of anything else you can do. Good luck!
