How to detect invisible Windows Live Messenger users?

Hotmail / Windows Live users...your advice please?

  • I've had a Hotmail account for many years now. A few months ago I installed Windows Live Messenger, and ever since I've been bombarded on a daily basis with tons of junk mail/spam at my Hotmail acount..."Go to culinary school and become a chef"..."Movie Club, get 4 movies for a dollar"..."Wal-Mart Jobs"..."Student aid for school"..."Human resources training"...etc etc etc... I'm 99% sure these emails are a direct result of Windows Live Messenger, as did not get them prior to installing WLM 3 months ago. I thought of removing Windows Live, but perhaps this wouldn't make any difference as these spammers (Microsoft?) already have my email address. I'm curious why I never had this issue over the last 4 years as Hotmail user...but now with 'Windows Live' I do...any tips on what can be done to resolve this issue? Thanks!

  • Answer:

You must have signed up to a site since you upgraded to Windows Live Messenger. Upgrading to WLM would not cause you to get spammed. If you didnt sign up to a site , you must have entered your email on a page in its literal format, ie, [email protected] , instead of whatever[at]hotmail[dot]com (the spam bots dont recognise that format where as they do pick up the first format i mentioned) Best of luck, Dave

I'm not so sure! I have one of the earliest hotmail accounts ever created - it's over 11 years old! - and about 6 months ago, I started getting spammed to death on it. I don't have or use Live Messenger, since I prefer Yahoo for that. I agree the timing is a bit curious, but I almost wonder if something didn't get activated from several years back. Like maybe a major spammer selling our addies to someone, and then the active ones being re-sold or something crazy like that.
