How do I remove grayscale for a digital image that appears in color "sometimes?"?
-
So I have a jpeg image that I have downloaded from a website. It appears b/w online as well as when opened with photoshop or my image viewer of choice. However, the icon image that is show when viewing the file in a folder on my computer appears in detailed color. This would lead me to believe that the color information for this image still resides within the file, perhaps hidden under some layer of metadata. (I believe the image was created on a mac if there's anything important about how your basic mac image program might handle effects.) Is there anyway that I can remove the b/w level of this image and return to the true colors hidden underneath, or is this just some weird artifact?

Answer:
Seems you've found a corrupt JPEG. So far, no one has found a reliable way to fix such errors. Those who can do so only on a case-by-case basis, as a lot of investigation and low-level bit wrangling is involved. The best I can suggest is to find one of these people (web search for "corrupt JPEG") willing to take the job. *Do not* trust any company who says they can do so for a price—odds are they are scammers looking to profit from others' desperation. If there really was a reliable way, it would have been included in Photoshop long ago. _____ Just as likely, the colors have been permanently removed from the image, but the thumbnail hasn't been updated to reflect this. Usually, color data is *removed* from an image, leaving behind the luminance data. There is no way to store effects in a JPEG file. The JPEG commission would have to standardize such a feature, figure out the best way to encode it into the file, and enforce compliance on companies that use the technology. _____ One unlikely possibility is that there are indeed subtle colors in the image, and that they are exaggerated when reduced to thumbnail size.
