What's the best way to manage an iPod without iTunes?

  • I don't like the overhead/dialing home all the time of iTunes. I have an iPod, and I'm stuck with it til I upgrade. I'm trying to use Rhythmbox in Linux & my iPod was corrupted on update. ..So now, I have to boot into a computer running iTunes, and dial in to Apple to get the software to restore the firmware on the iPod, before I can boot back into the Linux comp not running iTunes and try to move mp3s over to the iPod again (possibly repeating this cycle). What's the best *trustworthy/non-spy/adware, free* way to do this all without any need for iTunes (restore firmware on iPod)? & as a side question, what mp3 player would you recommend for an upgrade (I want something as non-proprietary as possible, w/ AM/FM radio included, that won't be buggy from the outset or die on me prematurely - preferably something w/ flash memory so that it won't skip when shaken. Thanks!

    don't use i tunes it's kinda a rip off with some songs being more than a dollar use Napster because it's made buy best buy and all songs are a dollar if you use gift cards!! you should also get a sansa clip mp3 (has flash memory) it's really good and you can move the music that you download off napster to i tunes without using the market place = )

go through each file created in the directory on the ipod and manually add each song too the proper file, they're non Linear number tag that i've yet to figure out, you'll find it a whole lot simpler to just use itunes, or get an non apple mp3 player
