How do I open an odt file?

I wrote my resume with an open office writer (.odt file). Will my employer be able to open it?

  • Answer:

open it back up with openoffice, do save-as and save it as a .doc file which is compatible with microsoft office and is universally accepted as a resume format.

Not all of them. A lot just use basic Word files. You can save Open as a Windows format file.

You can instead save the file as a ".doc" file and then you can send it.

I doubt it, thats not one of the filetypes that office opens.. maybe though.. who knows!

Probably not but I think it give you the option to save it as a Word doc. Do that instead.

Everybody seems to be forgetting the PDF-option. Openoffice allows you to export your odt's to PDF. You simply click the icon left to your printer ("export directly as PDF") and save it. Everybody should have Adobe Acrobat Reader somewhere on his pc or mac so anybody can open it. On top of that it looks a bit more professional to send a PDF (as you usually make'm with Acrobat Professional or Illustrator and as it is a more "definite" format, ie harder to change afterwards) Some other pro's for exporting to PDF is that your fonts will be saved with your doc (don't be to fancy on your resume though) and that your lay-out will be the same on any pc or mac or printout (so you don't have the crap that your perfect one page CV is printed messy and with one line on the second page) But there's the (very) slim chance your future boss doesn't have adobe acrobat reader although his browser will probably tell him to download it anyway.

I wouldn't count on it. Convert it to a rich text file document. This will make it readable on just about everything. Failing that go for the industry standard .doc file (not 2007 .docx or you will have the same problem)

If he has Microsoft Office only no. But you can suggest him to upload the file on Google Docs and then read it. If it's too complicated you can upload it yourself, publish it and then share with him just the link : http://www.iterating.com/products/Google-Docs

You might want to send it as a .doc or .rtf file. Open your resume with Writer and click on File then Save As. Choose DOC or RTF as the file type.
