How to delete rows in Excel 2003?
-
I have an Excel file (which I did not create) which has columns A-H and rows 1-1083. I cannot click outside this range of rows and columns because it is grayed out and unclickable. I can add or delete columns but I can only add rows, every time increasing the range of rows by the amount of rows I add. When I try to delete a row by selecting it and right-click > delete row it acts like is deleting it but the row is still there. The same happens when I select a whole bunch of rows and delete them, they're still there afterwards. I have deleted the macros I found and also any VBA code, thinking that it was some script keeping me from deleting rows, but to no success. I have also checked to see if the sheet/workbook is protected and it is not. I am out of ideas. Can anyone please help?

Answer:
"… which has columns A-H and rows 1-1083." "… grayed out and unclickable." Is the rest of the worksheet hidden? Right-click on the row/column headers for the Unhide command and see if that helps. Any filters in place? Try clearing them.

It's hard to say what it is that is causing your problems without looking at the file. It sounds most like someone has done a protection to it allowing users to only modify the file in certain cell ranges and in certain manners. Sometimes the best solution is to use a macro to copy all of the data from the workbook that you couldn't likely copy otherwise, create a new workbook and start over. By using a macro, you can normally select and copy data that you couldn't by attempting it manually because the file probably won't let you select those cells manually.

It sounds like there are hidden rows and columns and most likely formulas that are hidden and protected as well. If there is a gap in the column headings, skipped letters, then those columns are hidden, same thing for row numbers. It's a common practice to hide the formulas like this to keep the average user from modifying them. You say it's not passworded so you can expose them. Another way to expose the whole worksheet is to import it into open office.
