How to use dial up in ubuntu 10.4?

Why do so many people use Ubuntu or any other Linux Operating Systems?

  • I just went through hell for the last three weeks finding modem and dial up packages after installing Ubuntu 9.10. I had the Gnome PPP and had the modem going quite successfully after paying $20 for the license of that modem driver. I then downloaded the updates all day yesterday and everything was just starting to go good, but then what happened? The Update Manager said my Ubuntu was still not up to date, and asked me to do a "Partial Update" of 50 MB of packages, so I went ahead not realizing they were going to change the Kernel version of my Ubuntu OS. After the update, all the modem packages and driver, dial up and other packages that became oudated because of the new kernel version that was just installed, all those dial up packages just "vanished" out of thin air after all the work over the past three weeks! So this means I have to find all the packages for this modem in the internet with another connected computer and burn CDs and load them into this computer with Ubuntu all over again because of this new kernel version, now that was stupid! IMHO I think I came across the dumbest Operating System that just couldn't do anything properly from the very beginning, and this is just too crazy! I'm trashing this Ubuntu OS CD into the garbage, but like my question was, why do so many people like this Ubuntu OS? After all the trouble I went through, this free OS is not worth trying unless it already had all the proper drivers and packages to begin with, so why do people use it?

Most modern Linux Distros can, and should be, run as a "Live CD", FIRST, to make sure that it's compatible with your PC's hardware. If it's not, try a different Distro. Your mistake was installing it on your hard drive knowing you had hardware driver issues. And, you're the 1st person, that I ever heard of, that actually paid for a Linux Device driver. The main reason people choose to run Linux is: They're fed up with Windows being the EASY target of Malware. And, things like having to pay for what should have been a free Service Pack for Vista, called Windows 7. So, switch back to Windows if you want, we Linux junkies are having too much fun to care!
