My taskbar has disappeared?

Desktop icons, taskbar and start menu have disappeared off desktop?

  • Helping a friend. His less-than-1 year old HP computer with Windows 7 is doing something weird. It boots up like normal. The icons and taskbar appear on screen, then five seconds later, the icons and the taskbar just disappear (blink and they're gone) and in their place is a window with all the programs showing, like when you hit Save As and the computer pops up with that window, wondering where in the system you want to save whatever you're doing. If I close that, all I get is the desktop picture, nothing else. I end up closing it and putting it in sleep mode, then chaging users to get the shut down icon to appear. I tried going into Control Panel but when I click on the Taskbar controls section, nothing pops up. Is anyone else experiencing this? This only started in the last 24-48 hours. What is causing this? What is the fix?

  • Answer:

I second the virus comment. Might not be one but if you downloaded something recently or opened a weird website then maybe you do. Also if you didn't change any of the settings and this happened on its own then its probably a virus. Can you log on the internet? If a website is trying to sell you something don't take it and try to erase any files that were downloaded in the past 24-48 hours. Or just take it to the store to get it fixed.

Virus maybe? Try booting it in Safe Mode and see what happens

I have windows xp so prolly not much help, but try right clicking the task bar when it first pops up, then left click the 'lock the taskbar' if it has it. It should have a checkmark on it, if it doesn't, you need to click it.

While there is probably just one easy answer to this problem, it might take a few different wrong ones before we get to the right one. So here are a few things that you should try first and hopefully we find the answer sooner than later :) First thing you should do: Open the Performance troubleshooter by clicking the Start button and then click Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Check for performance issues. (Make sure to click the option for Windows to fix all issues automatically) If this doesn't fix the issue, then you should rule out the chance of the computer being infected with a virus before moving on to anything else. So to start the process- Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Defender, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Defender. Choose advanced scanning options!! Make sure you select these options: -Scan archive files. Scanning these locations might increase the time required to complete a scan, but spyware and other potentially unwanted software can install itself and attempt to hide in these locations. Scan removable drives. Use this option to scan the contents of removable drives, such as USB flash drives. -Use heuristics. Windows Defender uses definition files to identify known threats, but it can also detect and alert you about potentially harmful or unwanted behavior by software that's not yet listed in a definition file. For more information about definition files, see Keep Windows Defender definitions up to date. -Create a restore point. Because you can set Windows Defender to automatically remove detected items, selecting this option allows you to restore system settings in case you want to use software that you didn't intend to remove. Then choose the option to run a FULL SCAN and hopefully if a virus is the cause, then it will get picked up by the scan and removed. If this doesn't help the issue, then the next BEST step to take is to start the computer in safe mode and run System Restore and choose a restore point when your PC was working correctly. Make sure to reboot after making your selection and everything should go back to normal. GOOD LUCK
