  • i hav to create an entry in /etc/fstab file. /dev/hda1 /windows ntfs nls=utf8,umask=0222 0 0 to view the other partitions(which were created using windows set up) while logged into the linux but the permission is denied even though i am the only user. how to create the entry moreover how to edit the time for which it waits to choose between ubuntu ,memtest ,n windows (this menu is prior to the windows os choice menu) or set windows as default os

  • Answer:

    1) On ubuntu there is no root user. you have to edit the fstab by hand using this command: # sudoedit /etc/fstab otherwise you can change properties of a partition by clicking: System ---> Administration ---> Disks 2) Your boot manager is called "grub" - it can be configured by using this command: # sudoedit /boot/grub/menu.lst change the line that reads: "timeout 10" to some other number, like 60 (for 60 seconds)

You have to be logged as superuser (root) to be able to doing system tasks. Reboot your machine and log in as root and type your superuser password. Also try chmod 444.
