What's the right DVD rip resolution/aspect ratio?

  • Hi! I want to make a rip of a DVD (for private use, legal in my country of residence), but I'm uncertain about the correct aspect ratio. The DVD box says it's 2.35:1, but the programmes I'm using refuse to accept this resolution. The DVD is "Rambo" (Part 4, UK Edition), the programmes I have are "ImTOO DVD Ripper Ultimate" and "DivX Plus Converter" (all registered online). Also, If I use DivX Plus, the resolution of the rip it creates is 1000x568 (which can't be right as far as I'm informed, as a DVD only has a resolution of 720x576 in the first place). What would be the correct resolution for a full-DVD-quality rip in the correct aspect ratio at maximum resolution? 720x400, 720x300 or other? What's the maximum bitrate making sense (if hard disc space isn't relevant and I want the very best quality possible on DivX)? What's better: DivX or Xvid? How can I add a second audio track for commentary? Can I put the entire content of the DVD into an DivX/Xvid/avi file (including the menu) by any means? Thanks in advance for your efforts. W.ill
