What's the difference between Windows vs. Linux?

Linux vs Windows (Vista)?

  • Hi like many I want to try out a different operating system while waiting for Windows 7 and thinking about checking out Linux. I was wondering what the major advantages of Linux is... Also I know u can burn Linux onto a CD then run it but can u move Linux onto a Portable Hard Drive and do that same thing? or maybe a USB key? Also any recommendation of good Linux versions would be appretiated thx

  • Answer:

one of the easiest ways to try Linux is to install Ubuntu using Wubi - free http://wubi.sourceforge.net/ it installs as a normal programme in Windows but when you restart your pc, you could get the option to launch Windows or Ubuntu; when you want to get rid of Ubuntu, just boot into Windows and uninstall Wubi as usual.

I've used Ubuntu for a year. It's very easy-to-use and I found it the most Windows-like distribution, for example because you don't have to use commands if you would like to configure something in that system. However, you should learn 1-2 commands for terminal, because it's much faster to install softwares in it.

I'd also recommend Wubi, just because it makes installing and removing a dual-boot so easy (no repartitioning). A good version of Linux to start out with is Linux Mint. It's based on Ubuntu but already comes with popular proprietary codecs preinstalled (Flash, MP3 playback, Java, etc.)
