How do you make .gif images of video clips?

How can you make an animated GIF on Photoshop CS3 Extended?

  • I want to make animated GIF avatars from music video clips, using Photoshop CS3 Extended. They have discontinued ImageReady and now have embedded the animation feature and video layers in the latest photoshop. I want to know how I can actually make the animated GIF avatar, and then save it as a GIF file with a compressed file size (no more than approx.100kb) What is the maximum file size of a video file that you can embed in video layers in photoshop?

  • Answer:

Yes you can make and save an animated gif in Photoshop CS3 Extended - I just got that program for my birthday in November and I've just figured it out. :) However I don't know how detailed an answer I can give you,...I'll try though! (I'm afraid I don't yet know anything about video layers.) Using the Animation Palette, you highlight all the frames you want to use then with the "fly-out" menu on the Animation Palette (clicking the little thing under the "X" on the Ani Palette) select Make Frames From Layers. Then you can fiddle with the frames, if you want ones to remain constant, highlight it/them and on the fly-out menu and select Match Layers Across Frames (you may need to then delete the original layers you used to match). You can reverse-order the frames with Reverse Frames of course...and you can change the length the frames display with the little drop-downs under each frame in the Animation Palette. Once you get the animation the way you want, click "Save For Web & Devices", and you will get a window where you can see all kinds of settings. I haven't done any fiddling with the settings myself (I just click Save) but, it looks like you can see how big the file will be when saved, so by altering the settings you could compress it and everything... Anyways I'm sorry I'm not very good at tutorials. :) I just wanted you to get a positive answer letting you know that yes it is possible! Do what I did and Google "save an animated gif in Photoshop Extended" for step-by-step help. Also if your Photoshop disc came with the "Video Workshop" cd you should watch the tutorials on there. Good luck! :)

you can't because imageready isn't embedded in photoshop. You have to use Flash, because it's now part of the adobe suite.
