Which Windows OS should I choose?

Windows Vista or Windows 7?

  • I am planning a custom PC build with the following specs: The Case: Xigmatek Utgard (windowed version) The Motherboard: Asrock 870 Extreme3 The Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition The Video/Graphics Card: Club3D HD6870 The Memory: Corsair XMS CMX8GXM2A1333C9 The Power supply: XFX Pro 550W The Optical Drive: LG GH22NS50 The Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB The Network Card: Sweex LW312 Wireless-N PCI Adaptor I however do not know which OS I should choose, I have been using Windows Vista on my current computer and I have found it to be fine (it isn't bad, and has had over exaggerated reviews) but Windows 7 is obviously the latest version. I however am wanting to side with the Vista as it has lots of software (as it has been out for a lot longer) that is for it which you can't get on Windows 7. I need it to be a 64 Bit OS due to my RAM, I however do not know which one to choose! Please can you suggest which one you would choose, Vista with the most Software or 7 being the newest one? Thank you

Nice choices for a new build. I'm guessing your Ram is 8GB, if so make sure you buy 2x 4GB to run it in dual channel. Also you will need to purchase a aftermarket cpu cooler because Black edition processors are intended for overclocking, so you won't get a stock cooler. If you want a stock cooler look for a retail processor. (not black editions). Anyways... You should go for Windows 7. Windows 7 was improved from Windows Vista. Pretty much all Windows Vista software is compatible with Windows 7. I can run software and games that were made when there was only XP. If a software is not compatible, you can run it in compatibility mode. (using properties) I'm not sure if compatibility mode is available on all windows 7 versions, maybe just ultimate, but i'm using ultimate at the moment and never had a problem. So far all programs have been compatible & didn't need to use compatibility mode. I know nowadays you see software being for sale labeled compatible with windows 7, don't let that confuse you. That's just marketing crap. For example when Nero 9 was released at a similar time of windows 7. They decided to do the whole windows 7 compatible crap, as if it wasn't before. I'm running Nero 7 without a problem. (made years before windows 7). Windows Vista is actually the biggest disappointment in the Windows OS's.

i dont even need to read all that, go with windows 7 all the time, people say vista is bad for a reason. i have had nothing but trouble with it since it was released. just because vista is older, doesnt make it a wiser choice, it has been patched and still is not at stable/secure as windows 7. windows 7 x64 is absolutely brilliant, i am using it now and if you ever wanted a recommendation, i would say windows 7 64 every time.

Definitely Windows 7, there are many things wrong with Vista including performance issues, With your specs. Also with Windows 7 you have latest updates, support for Vista will stop in the next few years. Your specs look like you can run it well, and most programs work with Windows 7 that worked on Vista.

Windows 7 - because it's the most stable Windows release (and also the newest one). Most of your software that worked in Vista, should also work in Windows 7. You could also try dual-booting if you *really* need the software on Vista, otherwise go with Windows 7.

I was a big fan of XP, but I changed to Vista; awful! Went back to XP, but have just upgraded to Win 7 Home Premium and I'm not disappointed. Win 7 gets my vote.

Even if you don't know crap about operating systems, don't you think the latest and current is always the right choice?

Are you seriously considering Vista? What do you mean Vista has more software.ANYTHING works on Vista will work on 7.

Windows 7 all the way here, it has all the virtues of Vista but practically none of the down sides!
