Can I update Windows XP from disk?

Trying to upgrade windows xp from bootcamp using win 7 download. Please Help.?

  • Ok, I have a 2009 mac book pro and i curently have windows xp service pack 2 installed via bootcamp (Not activated/validated) I decided to update to windows 7 to avoid activation and am currently downloading the windows 7 stuff (I got the student discount thing with the actual disk coming in the mail) I have a feeling this is going to be a difficult or even impossible process... Can someone give me a heads up as to what im going to have to do? How can I do it without the actual disk?

  • Answer:

Mistake # 1: Your XP is likely "Pirated", or, you would have Activated already. Mistake # 2: You can't Activate a "Pirated" version of XP. Mistake # 3: You can't upgrade to W7 until you get Service Pack 3 for XP. "(I got the student discount thing with the actual disk coming in the mail)" Wait for the DVD to arrive in the mail, and then, read and follow all installation instructions. A full W7 will allow you to replace XP, even if it is pirated, because Microsoft wants to make you honest. But, if it's an UPGRADE DVD only, you must start it from within XP with SP3 on your Mac, and you may be out of luck.
