Word document opens weird with Open Office? How do I change the format?

My math teacher uploads answer sheets in Microsoft Word, on her website and they're all numbers and formulas right? So when I download them onto my macbook pro which has Open office, the formulas and numbers get all screwed up. Is this a formatting issue? How can i open the documents in a different readable format?

Down the bottom left of your word window there are icons which change the format
