Is downloading music in limewire illegal?

  • I just found out today that it has been a law that downloading music from limewire are illegal. I just want to know if it's true here in Canada and how will it affect people who frequently uses limewire to download songs? Is downloading from a torrent illegal as well?

If the music is copyrighted, and you don't own it, it is technically illegal to download it from any source. Sometimes I use limewire to find an obscure song that isn't available anywhere else, but I don't make a habit out of it. Simple answer: if you're just trying to get it for free, then you are depriving the songwriter/publisher of his or her living. If a song was recorded prior to 1940, it's probably public domain and fair-game

Downloading music, videos, software of any kind is not legal in any country in the world downloaded from limewire or any other P2P service. Limewire in itself is legal. What is not legal is that just about all of the material you may download is usually copyrighted and this is theft of another persons intellectual material. (And this is a crime). Copyrighted music is illegal to download, so yes most music you will dl from Limewire or torrents is illegal. It always has been illegal. Once again I feel I need to point out that Limewire the program itself is not illegal, downloading copyrighted music is illegal.
