Why is my sound not working in ubuntu?

How do I fix the sound on my ubuntu labtop isn't working?

  • One day the sound was working and the next day it stopped. Every time I click on the sound device this is what it says: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found I have no idea how to fix, people tell me how but its to complex to figure out what they mean. I need someone to walk me through it step by step, for ex: 1. click on app 2. type in code blah blah blah I know the sound works because I hear the noise when I log in. Thanks

If you are using Ubuntu 8.04 / 8.04.1 try going into the Synaptic Package Manager and uninstall Pulse Audio, whilst you are in the Synaptic Package Manager install alsa oss. LUg.

Linux Mint 11

Are you using gnome Go system sound Test whether OSS is working? Another thing is Ubuntu is GPL they do not include propriety sound be default so mp3 plugins may have to by installed separately via synaptic
