My taskbar has disappeared?

I've Just Noticed That The Volume Icon Has Disappeared From The Taskbar?

  • As far as I can tell, it was there for most of the day but now it seems to have disappeared. I went to the control panel and clicked on "Show or hide volume (speaker) icon on the taskbar". The box next to the volume icon says "off" but it's faded out so I can't click on it to change it. Can you tell me how to get it back onto the taskbar and what would have caused it to disappear in the first place. Thanks for any helpful answers.

  • Answer:

This happens to me all the time with all the icons from volume to battery, idk why. Just restart your computer and everything should be fine.

I am guessing you recently let windows update your drivers, and it did what it usually does when windows tries doing drivers, messes them up. Anyway, visit your computer manufacturers site, look up your model number under their driver section, find the audio driver, download it, and install it. Restart computer, and your sound should be back.

You didn't mention the OS, but if it's XP or similar, this can happen if the file Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing. You can recover it from your install CD. There is a detailed article on the MS website about this at the link below. Also, check in your control panel to see that the sound devices your computer uses are set to the actual item (like in my case, RealTek Sound) instead of just default.
