What caused my computer desktop icons to change to Windows generic icons?

    They should NEVER change to lnk file under good condition. Your computer should have got a virus. First backup all data you need, before you continue to ponder what else can be done. Then, prepare to reformat and reinstall everything. Of course, before that, try all other possible effort than may save you from the reinstallation.

have you disassiocated the file type with the application. eg said that .htm files are no longer opened by IE or firefox

I had this problem, was due to color quality on the settings tab. Try putting it at 32 bit and reboot.
