How can I get that 'old microphone' sound?

Why Do I Get A Clicking Sound When I Record With A Microphone Through The Sound Card?

  • I'm using Roxio's default settings to record through the sound card with a microphone. I get about two clicks per second during the playback. But when I use another software, I don't get the clicking. Any suggestions on what I can do to eliminate the clicking while using Roxio?

  • Answer:

Even if it depends on the software, that sounds like RF interference. Is your sound card build on to the motherboard or in a PCI slot? If it's in a slot, try moving it. Position it far away from other things in the computer if possible, especially away from hard drives and modems. Usually clicking sounds in audio are caused by radio interference put out by other components in your computer. Another somewhat less likely but still possible culprit is a device other than your computer. Does the audio cable go by any old CRT monitors, printers, or big power cables? EDIT: Come to think of it, the frequency of the clicking in that specific program makes me think "hard drive" -- it's probably writing the audio from memory to disk. Is the hard drive light coming on at about the pace of the clicking? EDIT 2: Well, if you've changed every variable except the software, I guess it's a software bug. Weird.
