How can I watch a video without the "pauses"? (Please read added details)?
-
I'm trying to watch the first few episodes of Survivor online because, yeah, I'm a Survivor freak. It's sucked for the past 13 seasons but still I try. Problem is, the video is constantly breaking up on me. I use Windows XP, have DSL, and am now playing the (80 minute long) video on mute in the hopes that once it finishes downloading I'll be able to play it pause-free. Problem is that I'll be in bed by then and if I shut down the computer, I imagine I'll lose all my hard work. Is there another way to watch without the pauses? I use an emachine and I know the video driver card needs an update but I can't find that update on the emachines site and am worried about downloading from another source. In other words, I'm also using Adobe Flash Player 9. Thanks friends, new & old

Answer:
My wireless connection gets slow like that when cellphone traffic is high... I just let it sit and download, even if I'm going to bed... save the file and shut it down in the morning... watch it the next evening.

Once the video starts playing, pause it for a few minutes. When streaming video, your computer has to buffer: What it does is continue downloading the file into a temporary folder, and plays the video from there. If it plays faster than it downloads, it'll eventually have to pause itself until your computer can download enough to continue playing. Depending on the site you're downloading from, you may be able to right-click on the video link and select "Save target as." Then you can download the video into the file of your choice to watch later. If it's an embedded video (most legit sources are), pausing the playback for a few minutes will allow it to buffer ahead enough to begin watching it. Your video card isn't to blame unless the "pauses" are really jerky video playback. Some websites encode to H264 AVC (relax, you really don't need to know the technical stuff behind this), which allows higher quality video for smaller filesizes. The problem with AVC is that it's very system-intensive to decode during playback. Older hardware can have issues with it. Your connection speed will dictate how fast your video can buffer, since the buffering is dependant on how fast your computer can download ahead of what you're currently watching. So if you can watch a bit of it smoothly before it freezes, it's not a video card issue. Just pause the playback, allow it to buffer ahead for a few minutes (have a cookie and perhaps a glass of milk), then hit play again. You should be good!

The problem is probably the server the files are located on. A better way would be to download the entire seasons via bittorrent. Then you can watch them whenever you want without any problems.

Just pause the video once it begins. It will continue to buffer in the background. After several minutes you can start it playing again and hopefully it will run without the pauses. One thing you may want to do is go over to Speedguide.net and download TCP Optimizer (and run it). A little tweeking of your internet connection can make a big difference.

Search on youtube... you will find em Then use Youtube Catcher aka Atube catcher to download the video to yr pc and you can watch any time you want. You can also burn the files to disc and watch them on yr dvd player. if you have problems email me [email protected]

Yes, you will only have to wait for half the time. Let it download halfway and when it reaches halfway, start playing it. Unless you have the worst connection in the world, you should be able to play it full way without any pauses.

for any video online i usually like you said put it on mute or just pause the video and let it load sometimes it depends on what site you use if its better to pause it and let it load or just let it play without volume to load

I have no idea. I just download stuff onto my computer, about 40 mins for a 680mb file, depending on how many people are sharing, then watch whatever I want. http://www.mininova.org/search/survivor/seeds you may need to get a share file program, and make sure your PC can handle the 2G file. http://www.bittornado.com/ (this is the one I use. Limewire or other share file programs can have viruses on them.) Good luck. *edit* actually a 175mb episode will take 25-40 mins depending on how many seeds there are....

Um, a one-time investment in a DVD player and rent the episodes? More RAM? Less TSR's (All the unnecessary gargabe that's resident in memory that you have no idea who put it there) - end some processes like Yahoo anti-spy spyware, for example. Come and watch it with me. What am I saying, you're right, it sucks. I shall now take the walk of shame.
