Gimp version 2.4.6 HELP?

How can I make a avatar with it? I downloaded the program but like I got no clue what to do! O_O Also does anybody know how to render in gimp? Any answers would be AWESOME!

Look for a few tutorials...starting at the GIMP website itself! http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/ Also Google for some tutorials, you'll get how everything works out as you read through a few tutorials.
