How to write a TV program proposal?

What kind of free program (not game) would you use?

• I want to write a program, to test my programming skills. I was writing a Live-TV program, when I realized it was covered already and my program is pointless. So, now, I'm looking for ideas of a program (not a game) I should make. Any and all ideas I'm looking for. The one I like the best will get "Best Answer".

  The best freebies I have found are neat little programs that solve just one annoying problem. As a programmer I find these little simple solutions downright beautiful. For example, a program that you feed it a text file and it spits out all the email addresses (or URLs) that it can find, etc. Another thing that I like is clever mashups of free services. For example, last week some guy combined nuclear weapon damage data with Google Maps. You could find your town, enter the size of a nuke and you could see how much of the town it would destroy. If you want to see some cool mashups, go to Ning, they let you mix and match their aps for free. I went there and made a restaurant reviews website that shows all of the reviewed restaurants in a Gogle map. I probably spent 10 minutes making it, it is called the Starvin' Coder Review, because I reviewed places where programmers like to go eat in North Virginia, it is at http://nomoreramen.ning.com/ This was done for free, and just by mixing and matching between services.
