How To Learn Coding?

How important is it to learn web coding (html, css, java, etc...)?

  • I'm just starting out and want to learn web design so sorry if I sound like a fool, and no offense to any serious or professional designers. It seems like programs such as Dreamweaver make it easier to build web pages without learning all the technical coding. Is it still recommend to learn all this stuff or can you just learn how to use Dreamweaver ? Sounds like I'm just trying to take the easy route, which is sort of true, but really I just don't to waste a lot of time learning stuff I'll never use. What the best way to start building web pages ? and what are the most important skills to learn ??? Thanks

  • Answer:

When I started building pages I taught myself HTML. After you know HTML you can easily learn Java. You definitely need to know these skills if you want to make any kind of career of web design. For one thing, if you don't know the languages, the only things you can do to pages are what Dreamweaver allows. There are so many other things out there that you can do to pages. After you learn this stuff programs like Dreamweaver will irritate you because you won't have as much control over the look of the page.

although software like dreamweaver is making it easier to build webpages, it is not perfect and can make errors/mistakes, and therefore it is recommended you have a basic knowledge of these codings. "advance" web development requires you to know these languages at a minimum, extending into php, asp, and/or coldfusion and so on.

You should know all the technical stuff. Dreamweaver and other programs will help you a lot when writing the code but they won't do everything for you; you'll still have to hand-tweek code to get everything working correctly.

Hi HTML is the very basic language you should "know about" and CSS is a very, very good asset to have on a website as it makes things easier in the long run, The thing with dreamweaver is that it allows you to make a basic website with very little effort and in some cases you don't need to know what goes on behind the scenes but the problem you will come accross is that if you have a problem (and you will) with any of the code, you need to understand what is causing the problem so you can resolve it. I learnt HTML by using examples and dreamweaver then I picked up enough CSS to do most things, it has taken me a while as I had been troubleshooting problems for a lot of time. I am now at a stage where a don't use dreamweaver much any more because I know the HTML and all my sites I make are in PHP (that is another story!) so I just use Notepad++. I suppose the morral of the story is that without basic HTML you will spend five times as long looking at something you know nothing about when you have a problem or would like to add more features. Hope this helps

when something goes wrong you'll be lost. if you can invest 300 bucks on dreamweavers why not invest to learn css, html
