What is the best programming language to start with?

Visual Basic 9.0 is great for beginners and experts. It does everything and is all you need.

If you want to get into .NET development, then C# is a good place to start

I started with C++ and ended 8 years later with jail time, if you catch my drift. If you have the time, and can learn C++, you will be able to get any other language MUCH more easily, and over about 5 years, have around 10 under your belt. Try to learn the important ones, because it also depends on what you want to do. For high end servers, SQL. Or for web design, HTML. Or if you just want to become a programmer, learn linux. SLOWLY.

C/C++ If you get those under your belt, everything is virtually an offshoot from those 2. Oh, and FWIW, knowing more than one language and it's structure is usually more important than just knowing one. That's because some companies don't allow certain languages to be used in their computer programs, while others only OK specific languages.

I don't know why nobody else has recommended java but java is good to start with too. IMO I'd choose between python and java.
