hello, the Difference between webserver and application server is .. Using web server we deploy only web applications like which doesn't use the concept of Enterprise Java beans(EJB), where as Application server is used to deploy web applications as well as EJBs Another Main Difference is Web server run on only on HTTP protocols Application Server can run on any protocol like HTTP,FTP,SMPT and so on..

Web servers uses web containers to deploy jsp,servlets and some useful resources(images,properties,...) Using web servers we cant deploy reusable application components. Example: Apache tomcat, JWS, etc. Application Servers contains both web container and EJB container on EJB container we deploy reusable application components such as Beans.
