How to start MySQL server on OSX?

MySQL help? PLEASE?

  • Hi everyone. I have an issue with mySQL. I downloaded it and I am going by this tutorial online. Well, nothing is running all that great. I seem to have something wrong. I am told to run msqltest and it does nothing but show a black screen. I even went to start> All Programs> mySQL>MySQL server>MySQL command line and I get a flashing black screen then it disappears. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to learn this stuff. Maybe a little tutorial or step by step. I even have the book, but it does not help with installation issues just commands and code. Any idea what the issues is? Any Video tutorials? Good tutorials? thanks!

  • Answer:

You might want to look for MySQL Query Browser or the like -- basically a GUI to let you look at your database -- it might at least help you distinguish whether the issue is these tools, or something more basic in your installation, and maybe get a more decent error message if something is wrong. I never could get those command line tools and such to work as well as the GUI (oddly enough, because I usually prefer the command line). You can also try going to Start->run and type "mysql" to see what you get.

I believe the mysqltest is only for UNIX / LINUX systems, so if you are running under MS Windows, I don't think the test will work. If you need a tutorial try the MySQL site.
