What are file formats known to be unsafe?

Creating your am file formats?

  • I have noticed that when opening up a lot of open source games they are a LOT of different file formats that I have never seen before. Like theirs this one open source zelda game I look at and there were these files with a .qst extention, it was odd. When people make games do they like create there own file formats to cater the needs of there own game or particular program? Or is it that there is just a LOT of file formats I might not have heard of?

  • Answer:

Your first guess is correct. Every game has its own unique data storage needs. But what you have to realize is that ANYONE can make their own file format. The only reason Windows thinks a .txt file is a text document is because that's how it's stored in the system. When you install a new game, it might tell Windows what a .qst file is, or it might not. Whether or not Windows knows what it is, the program can still use it, because all files are just data. Also, sometimes extensions are reused while the internal format is different. However, your second guess is also correct. There are a LOT of standardized file formats. I personally don't know about .qst files. Try searching for information on the extension.
