How to open existing database in WebSQL?

Attn Tech Leads: Making a website for a client who has existing backend. What are my options for a database?

  • If a client already has a database and I'm making them a website (which they will host on their own web server) with its own data storage needs what are my options? Do I ask them to allow me to use their existing database, will they want to give me accesss? will they let me make a new one on their server, or should I create my own db on my own server and have the site use that one instead. Thanks for the input!

  • Answer:

It's fairly important to actually ask the client his/her preference. If you know what kind of DBMS they're currently running, you may want to write something up with info on that one, your favorite DBMS, and a few in between, specifying the good and bad points of using each for web services. If they have financial or other sensitive data floating around, tell them how you can make that safe while using the existing setup, or (depending), tell them how much safer a separate setup would be. Don't use your own server for this, if you can avoid it; rather, give the client the knowledge to decide on and obtain his/her own DBMS for the project. If you are forced to use your own server, make it very clear that you control the box, and you own the data. Not so brashly, but still...
