Can Someone answer these questions regarding Windows XP?
-
1) Under Windows XP, what is a "stop error" (or "blue screen") message? 2) What is a device driver? Suppose I needed a device driver for my Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4250 printer - how could I obtain it? (Assume that i am using Windows XP.) 3) Suppose you get an error message indicating a "corrupt registry file" (Using Windows XP). What is this? 4) Again, with repect to Windows XP, what is "safe mode"? Why would you use "safe mode"?

From your questions, I am assuming you're new to Windows, or just Windows XP. 1) The stop error is a serious error in the operating system affectionately called the Blue Screen of Death. If you see this, you'll most likely need to restart though I hardly ever see it these days. 2) A device driver is software Windows needs to run a piece of hardware. Before you can use your printer, your computer needs to know how to talk to it. If you have a disc for the printer, drivers are on there, if not, head to hp.com and download them. 3) The Registry is where all the important settings are stored. Depending on what the corrupted file is, you can either ignore it or may have to re-install something. 4) Safe mode is used when your system is having serious problems. It starts Windows with only the very basic and needed programs. Hope that helps.

1) Also known as the "Blue Screen of death." Normally these messages are undecipherable by anyone other than Microsoft engineers. Sometimes they are caused by seemingly random events, while other times potential software or hardware problems can cause them. 2) A device driver, or a software driver is a specific type of computer software, typically developed to allow interaction with hardware devices. You can get the drivers for your printer at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=412144&taskId=135 3) In computing, the Windows registry is a database which stores settings and options for the operating system. If this has become corrupted, you might need to restore an older version of the registry, or repair/reinstall Windows. 4) Safe mode is basically a diagnostic mode for your computer. When you boot your computer in safe mode, fewer programs are loaded at startup, and you have an increased chance of booting the computer without problems. Sometimes you can fix/correct things in safe mode that cannot be done in normal mode.

1. you choked your pc.. restart. (software conflict, overclocking) 2. should come with your 'device' i.e. a cd-rom. 3. that's it.. you have a corrupt reg file! re-install the file.. put in your original xp cd and go repair. 4. under safe mode, your xp limits certain apps, so you can uninstall, alter, reconfigure in the xase of being attacked by bugs or viruses.

1. The blue error is a hardware problem due to incorrect installation - incomplete installation of the the driver... 2. You need a device driver in order for Windows to recognize the device which means you need to install it... Drivers comes with the device example your printer... It comes with a CD 3. Corrupt registry is also another error from which you installed a driver incorrectly are installed incimpletely.. 4. Safe Mode - A windows mode which loads limited devices so that no further damage will occur to windows... My conclusion is all of these errors are connected to one... You installed your printer with wrong settings and driver...

The stop error I am not familiar with. A device driver ennables XP to attach to a printer or other device and use it. There is a list inside XP for the most common manufactureres - otherwise go to the manufacturer's site. The Registry is where all of your personal settings and customizing is kept. A "Corrupt File" there is a serious thing, and you need to get online with Microsoft and work with a techie to fix it, and yes, it may cost, but that is Mr. Gates. If the computer will not boot up in normal mode, it may in "safe Mode," and then it is possible to detect the error and fix it. This is entered by pressing one of the F keys during startup, see XP Help, "Bios set up."

A blue screen is a shutdown that might be caused by many things, one of which might be a corrupt registry file. The registry file is where the computer stores info that can be rapidly accessed by programs and the OS instead of holding it all in Ram and tying up rescources. A driver is a file to bridge a device to the OS and can normally be found on the makers website. Safe mode, that is a very important part of almost any OS. The other day I got a virus on my computer that was a Trojan Horse, it was a program that would access the internet on it's own and download other programs such as toolbars for the browser all by itself. Well, since XP was using the program I could not delete it and each time I told XP to delete it, it made itself into a copy with a different name and added a key to the registry to tell it to start that program when windows XP started. So, I booted the computer in safe mode, which told it not to start any programs from the registry, just start things from the cmos that are needed for basic operations. In that mode I could delete the Virus file, edit my registry to remove any attempt to try and start the file or look for its little copies, then run a virus detector to see if there were others it had made and remove them as well. Then off to starting back up in regular mode.. otherwise my computer would probably be shut down by now.

Given the number of questions you posed, I'm surprised the replies here aren't longer than they are. :) Instead of answering your questions (and repeating some stuff already mentioned), I'll give you the best operating system-related advice anyone can give you: BUY A BOOK on Windows XP. If you had a book, you wouldn't have had to post your questions. About 3/4 of the operating system-related problems in 'Computers & Internet' could have been solved if the Question poster had a book on XP.
