Hey according to me a computer engineer need not do any certification at all, as everything is covered under college ciriculum. If you want to increase your market value, concentrate on acads and score an aggregate of 80%. I am working for an American MNC company, If at all you are very keen on doing certifications, you have to do something like 1. Storage Technology Foundation by EMC2 2. CCNA 3. VMWARE 4. Microsoft or Cisco certifications 5. Oracle certifications. These type of certifications are not covered under ciriculum and will increase your market value drastically. but they are quiet tough to clear and costly too. You should do them in the final year or before placements. you can't do them in your 1st year because technically they are too strong.

Honestly, most employers value a college education over any certifications, because HR is not technologically savvy. Experience is the most wanted attribute. A certification will only increase your chances of getting the job if your interviewer knows of the work it took to get it. I know many engineers who have jobs and never even heard of certifications. There's programming, administrative, and hardware certifications. It depends on what field you want to go into. Don't prepare for a programming certification if you don't want a career in it. In my experience it takes at least a year or two to get a certification from scratch.

I'm final year B.E (ECE) student and my suggestion is to study LAMP (Linux, Apache, My SQL, PHP ), there are very less number of workers available in this category, and also LAMP is very much famous now a days you know. It's effective course. Along with this you can study CCNA and some SUN certificates. All the best for your carrier bro.....

CompTIA has many entry level certs. I would start with A+, Net+, and Security+. Depending on what you want to specialize in, you can continue with Cisco certifications (Most notably CCNA) Also, Microsoft certifications such as MCDST, MCSA, MCSE and MCITP make you VERY marketable.
