What does high offset mean?

What does "offset" mean in InDesign?

  • I have a 8.5x11 inches document with 0.125 inches bleed which I need to send to a company to print. When I export it to PDF, under "Marks and Bleed", there is something called "Offset". It is currently set to 0.0833 inches. What does 'offset' indicate? Should I just leave it as is, or set it to something else?

  • Answer:

The offset is the gap between the edge of your document and the point your registration marks are drawn from - you need some gap so that remnants of the registration marks don't show on your printed document after trimming. Generally the default is fine, for some stocks and printing processes you may want to increase the gap just to be sure.
