How much to charge for a website?
-
I am designing a web site for a greek restaurant I am currently employed at, how much should I charge? They said they would pay me depending on how good it is. There will be a forum on the website, online menu, I am creating a logo for the website, pictures of food and maybe some other goodies

Answer:
What you can do is set an hourly rate and track how long it takes you to do the site, or if they need a price before hand you can estimate how many hours you will put into it. Plus add a little extra time for changes they want you to make.

In US, 30-40$ per hr + expenses, thats probobly less than half the "pro" will charge and still ok compensation for an amateur. Also you can try to become the webmaster, paid by the hour to do the maintenance + get some extra benefits.

You basically have to judge it by the size of the restaurant that you're designing for.. Making websites like that is kind of hit-or-miss, so you have to judge accordingly. If they are kind of small, than $3-500, and if they are a larger restaurant, than charging a thousand dollars is acceptable. But then again, it really does depend on how good the sight is. Also, will you be keeping it updated? Because you should be getting paid to update the sight regularly? Also, if you are taking the pictures of the food and stuff, than you should get paid adequately for that as well. Hope that helps...

Well, if you are actually profeccient at XHTML/CSS and backend development in PHP or the like, then you can charge them a nice bit. If not, maybe ~12USD/hr to use a WYSIWYG editor to put the site together.

Find out how important it is to them. Then consider how much is your time worth. I would say $1,000 or more if it is really professional and takes a day or more to create.

Make sure you have the finished product first. Then calculate the time you spent building it and the remaining time you will spend updating it as well as the responsibilities involved. If it come to 40+ hours then charge your pay multiplied by that number. your pay x number of hours on site = profit This should be the offer. If they suggest higher by all means take it unless your not confident with the responsibility of maintaining a website and such.

thats a good question I'm just a high schooler, but I'm making a couple websites for these gentlemen I met at my job. One wants a simple website that he'll use as an online store. I'm charging $10 an hour. Another person is having me fix a website (professional one that looks good) and then having me make 3 page websites (he is selling domains) for 1/2 the profit, which my cut will be around $250 each site. I guess thats pretty good money, although my uncle (know-it-all) says he's underpaying me ($250 per), but then again, im no professional or anything I hope this kind of helps

First off never do any work on a site until you agree on payment. Second you need to calculate your hourly rate. You can then give an estimate and charge a flat fee or charge hourly but you'll have the information to back it up. Get a contract or promissary note so they can't get a good site and then say "I don't like it we're not paying" Need an opinion on how to calculate your hourly rate? read this http://www.sitepoint.com/article/freelance-pricing-1-set-rate
