What is the difference between a game designer and a game programmer? What does the game designer do? What is the average game designers salary? Do game designers work individually or as a team? In order to be a game designer what classes should a person take? How is the game designers job security? Do game designers get promoted? Who comes up with the ideas in the team?

Answer:
Game designers are the ones that draw the levels, the missions, the campaigns, etc. Game programmers are the ones that create the game logic, the characters, the interactions, etc. Example for a FPS : Game programmers create the graphic engine, the physics, the way the character interacts with its surroundings. ( More specific : what happens when the player bumps into an object, how the bullets fly, etc ) Game designers create the jungle level, the desert level. They make the stats for the enemies and what they should look like, etc. Both game programmers and game designers work in large teams. As far as I know ( Ubisoft experience) : - game designers and game programmers win the same amount of money - in order to be a functional game designer you need to have a Computer Science degree, and a few extras - job security ? we're not lumber jacks here. if you do your job well, you are secure. if you are sloppy, you are not secure - any game designer can achieve Lead Game Designer status, and maybe Project Manager. In huge games like Prince of Persia or Assassin's Creed, these are extremely well paid and respected positions. - In any team, anyone can come up with any idea. Programmers come up with ideas too. So do artists and others. Best of luck!

Game designers are generally the staff who develop the basic structure, rules and themes for a game. Programmers, on the other hand, write the code that allows the game to function. For example, in a 3D first person shooter, a game designer may create the 3D models for a game like the weapons, enemies and environments, as well as the rules of the game, etc. The game developer will use a programming language/environment like C++, Java, Flash, Unity, etc to build the game's rules, physics and generally connect all of the pieces together. The salary, individual/team and job security questions that you asked are really hard to answer as games can be very simple or very complex, and thus vary greatly in both budget and scale. Some games are both designed and programmed by just one person, others can be worked on by hundreds. Generally speaking, many console-based game designers have at least a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) or a BS (Bachelor of Science) in either 3D Animation and Design or a specialization in Game Design. Both of which generally require a large amount of study in both art/design and computer programming. The difference is a Game Designer plans out the game. For instance: Halo 3. The game designer put that it needs a level creator, a great multiplayer function, good story mode, and other features. A game programmer just programs the game. The salary depends on their sales/donations. Game designers usually works as a team because it's faster, and they don't need to know a crap load of stuff. Well, there are online classes a person can take. I recommend just getting a free program to help you get started. I'm going to post the link of a well known one for you to download. I don't get how you mean, "Security". Game designers are usually the head of the company. Mostly the Game designers, but others can too.

Look if you are realy serious then you should go check out a few game devlopers websites and look at the requriements for their job openings that will answer your question in great detail. In general you must be a programmer first and have at least two published titles under your belt to be taken seriously. Do you?
