I wanna be a web designer when I'm older.. I need some freeware?
-
I'm 13 and for about a year I have wanted to go into web design, I know it isn't long but I'm pretty set on it. I use an online web host called Piczo [www.piczo.com] and the websites I do on there I am happy with and my friends seem to like. I know two web designers, who both say, for personal websites the designs I do are good. Does anyone please know some freeware that I could use, and publish to the web free, and preferably without subscription. Also as like to Microsoft Front Page as possible as I am using it at school. Thanks guys x

Answer:
I agree you need to get into code, but using frontpage to start is not bad. It allows you to see the layout and code, and is a useful way to connect the dots, and see the code in real time. You will need to learn code to be a designer (well, a good one at least), but nothing is wrong with using frontpage, as long as you do not ignore the code Nothing is as robust as dreamweaver but I have used NVU before, and found it fun, and usefull for a freeware (open-source) app. "Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") is a complete Web Authoring System that combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web page editing. Nvu is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding."

im a web designer i have a few sites you can find me if you like at http://flyinghigh.through-my-eyes.org/designs i have never heard of the host piczo, but anyway you might want to go and buy your own domain or get hosted at a sub-domain not on a free server. if you think you would like to do it for a career go ahead, i guess some software you would need is a FTP program, other than that you really dont need anything else except your graphic program and notepad. i suggest you not use frontpage, (my friends that have sites, we joke and say that frontpage is cheating). if you dont like notepad you can also use Notepad ++ http://www.download.com/3001-2352_4-10516746.html

If you want to be a web developer I would wean yourself off frontpage now... you should learn how to write the actual html code yourself and not rely on a wysiwyg editor to do it. also, try to learn the right way. If you see a book that's showing you how to do presentation using tables, put it down and get another book. learn to write semantic html markup and use css for presentation... Front end engineers are actually in demand at my company... but that means guys that can actually do it the right way... Trust me you won't get taken seriously if you are using front page.. Besides, you are 13... you can pick this stuff up quick. ;-) If you need any more info feel free to email me.

Kid, abatardi's right - if you want to be a web designer, you need to learn to write HTML (or even better, XHTML) code. That way you can write your website at school - all you'll need is Notepad (or TextEdit, if on a Mac). XHTML is the easiest language to learn, and you can learn it fairly quick, too. Here are some good books that will get you writing web sites the REAL way: How to Do Everything with HTML and XHTML Learning HTML and XHTML Just go to your local library and check them out. The first one is a little simpler, so I would stick with it - especially for someone your age.

You didn't mention what sort of software you were searching for, so here's a few to check out. NVU is a good web authoring tool. http://www.nvu.com/index.php There's plenty of free stuff to check out here: http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/default.asp The best free FTP program is here: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ Not sure about this HTML editor, never tried it. http://www.alleycode.com/ Effect Maker...free version available for download where you can create simple flash and javascript: http://www.effectmaker.com/application/index.html Well, that certainly will get you started. Oh, yes, here's a few places to learn (X)HTML and CSS: CSS: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp (X)HTML: http://www.w3schools.com/xhtml/xhtml_intro.asp Good luck!! there is eclipse that can be used for lots of things like html, php java etc but may be a bit of overkill. A smaller version that does html, CSS and PHP is aptana.

ya, they are right. i started to learn web language at about one year ago. i start using frontpage(now known as publisher) to design my webpage. actually, its an usefull tool for beginner like us. after that, i start learning web language using notepad(just save as .html .asp .php) i start to learn css too. if you know C++ or JAVA, in my opinion, CSS is similar to function, which can be apply to tag again and again. in short, it can be reuse. you should learn about database too, cos webpage's function not only display things. database freeware like Mysql is useful. personally, i like javascript, php and asp. anyway, i'm now using dreamweaver, it save my time. for example, error **** found in line 300, oh god, if using notepad, you have to count line by line. p/s: you can learn php and mysql simultaneously. best wishes to you

Programmers Notepad (http://www.pnotepad.org/) is probbly the best software out there for designing websites in raw code. None of that WYSIWYG stuff lol. If you want a example of what it can do, my site was coded in it (http://www.syphernet.com) just check out the code (by right clicking -> View Source if you dont know :P)

I don't quite understand your question, but I found that the best way to build a website is through Webstarts. There is a unique drag and drop tool that makes it much easier to use. Here Is The Link http://www.Webstarts.com/
