He wants to learn to do web pages, editing and publishing them...he wants to set up and design them for others and himself. where should he look?

Answer:
Your local college is a start. Also, have him check with his HS guidance counselor for assistance. There are other online "schools" out there, but I would be very wary of them. //Steve

How-to-build-websites.com is designed for total beginners … and for people who use programs like Dreamweaver, FrontPage, and other wysiwyg programs (wysiwyg stands for: “What You See Is What You Get”) … and now want to learn what’s going on ‘behind the scenes’. Website architecture is an approach to the design and planning of websites which, like architecture itself, involves technical, aesthetic and functional criteria. As in traditional architecture, the focus is properly on the user and on user requirements. This requires particular attention to web content, a business plan, usability, interaction design, information architecture and web design. For effective search engine optimization it is necessary to have an appreciation of how a single website relates to the World Wide Web. For more information please visit "vibrant-info".....

Local college would be a good choice. However,if he wishes to self study the topic then it shouldn't be too difficult.Actually, its easy. The most common language (and basic too) used to build websites is HTML.He can start with it and continue onto CSS. Once he is done with it ,I'd suggest he moves on to JavaScript. This adds interactivity to your site and is an essential.Again, the difficulty level is beginner-intermediate. Further,PHP is another important web-language.All of this is enough to start with professionally,I believe. However, there are more languages you would want to learn to be a good web-designer.They include but are not limited to XML,SQL,ASP.... Accompany him to the public library. Look through those books to see if there is anything that make sense. Do the same at one of those bookstores that sells coffee. IMHO, it takes a book to ponder over and over and over again until the words that you thought were nouns turn into verbs -- the actions. The web is getting ready for HTML5 which includes JavaScript. So, a good book about HTML5 is the bleeding edge for him. Good luck. Kool dad!

He'll need to get books on HTML, CSS and Web Design. He can also start using programs like Dreamweaver to start designing websites asap. I recommend some good books in web design: http://www.rascojet.com/blog/index.php/2011/01/10-best-web-design-books/

If he wants to get started himself w3schools is a good place to learn the basics. All you need is notepad and a browser. http://w3schools.com html is the first thing to learn, then javascript and css. Advanced things come later. Hope this helps ^_^
