What is the best keyboard for graphic design?

Why don't we just throw out the QWERTY keyboard design and make ABCDEF the new and easier to use standard

  • The QWERTY was designed for use in a world of mechanical typewriters that had springs and levers and keys that would jam together if used too rapidly in succession ,Since that world no longer exists why should the keyboard that was designed for that world still exist ?

  • Answer:

because the qwerty keyboard have their keys in a position that allows for speedy typing, letters of the alphabet most frequently used are placed near the center where our index fingers reach, & letters that often appear together are easier to type because we use both our left & right hands, think about how easy it is to type, say "t-h-e" because its a common word it would be much too difficult to change it to the abcdef layout, a lot of ppl would not adopt it

The QWERTY keyboard layout was designed so that successive keystrokes would alternate sides of the keyboard so as to avoid jams in manual typewriters. Is frequently said that the design was also created to make people type slower. First designs of manual typewriters using keyboards with letters on alphabetical order could not keep up with the speed of fast typers and the QWERTY keyboard layout was designed to reduce jamming. See: http://home.earthlink.net/~dcrehr/whyqwert.html Later a layout called Dvorak was introduced to allow faster typing and reduce fatigue but has never got widespread use. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard The QWERTY keyboard layout survived the era of electrical typewriters and the digital age because it was the first standard design. If we forced a keyboard change, millions of people would go from being competent, fast, typists to hunt-and-peck beginners. The world of business would come to a screeching halt. (It takes a few years to become really competent, and the world isn't going to stop while all the typists in it learn a new keyboard.)

How would that be easier? The majority of the world knows how to type using QWERTY; it would take too long for people at adjust to if we changed it now.

There was more to it than just jamming. The most frequently used keys were placed on a QWERTY keyboard at the locations where they would be easier to hit. An ABCDEF layout is actually kind of awkward in that respect.

Mainly because people are creatures of habit. There have been a few different keyboard layouts proposed over the years, but none have managed to gain widespread acceptance. One of the more popular ones is the Dvorak http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard , but funniliy enough, most are not abcde, still, once someone has learned to type, they dont want to have to relearn I guess. And there has been no proven tests that say one layout is more efficient and faster then another.

I love your brain Mr. Danger! Let's make a new keyboard! I totally agree. I want it to have birds, kittties, and the ability to shoot lazers!

REASON: Because it would, literally, cost millions of dollars in lost hours to change...so much for Obama...lol...
