What can you tell me about Yahoo! Messenger 8? How is it different from Messenger with Voice? Is it better?
-
My friend wants me to switch over to Yahoo!'s Messenger 8. Is it a Beta program? What does that mean? How is it better or different from Yahoo! Messenger with Voice? Do I need to uninstall the old Messenger with Voice program from Add/Remove before I allow the download of Messenger 8 to go through? I really need to know if this is a wise change-over for my system. Is it like an upgrade? I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2. In closing, what should I watch for? Any cautions? Things to check out before downloading it? What's your "scoop" on Messenger 8? I need lots of input on this before I go ahead and download it into my system. If I download Messenger 8 and do not like it, or want to keep it, how do I get back my old Messenger with Voice once again? Thanks very much for kindly taking the time to answer all my questions on this one! - C.

Answer:
Yahoo! have brought out the Beta version for their popular IM Client, Yahoo! Messenger 8. There are minor changes in the interface but the main new feature this time is the introduction of Plug-ins to Yahoo! Messenger. You can get the Yahoo! Messenger Plug-in SDK at http://developer.yahoo.com/messenger A list of user-submitted Plug-ins can be found at http://us.gallery.yahoo.com/messenger This is a great addition to Y! Messenger and it is in line with the continuing trend of different software developers providing SDKs for user customisation, probably the next best thing to open source software. Some other new features provided as built-in plugins are access to random questions on Yahoo! Answers (giving only part of the question, tempting you to click on it and get redirected to their website) and updates on Yahoo! 360. Yahoo! have been talking about a possible merging of MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger contacts, but that has not been implemented as of now. ********************************** There are little feature differences as you can see, so if you just want the voice part of yahoo, then just continue to use 7.0 or 7.5. There are a few (very few) people who has had problems with version 8 and they ended up downgrading back to 7.5. There are known issues with 8 loaded up in Windows XP that yahoo is currently trying to fix.

Quite simple if you are not using msn or any other chat tools keep sticking to your old yahoo messanger with voice. That's good and meets the requirement. else your choice. I am not very comfortable. Loading takes lot of time of course my system is an old one.
