Should I get a formal education? (Post graduation)?
-
I completed my graduation in Mechanical Engineering an year back. I spent the past year trying to create something useful for all of us, in computers. Why mech to computer.... I like computers more.... not because of the salary or anything.... I think we can create something using computer, we dont require massive infrastructure. I have tried to approach few companies with my ideas, but because it is not a profit making software, they dont want to even listen to me. So, I was thinking, may be a Post graduation in Computer Science might give me some credential to atleast listen to. Or I can join a computer company here in India. Or I can continue developing my softwrare, but in the mean while, how do I feed me and my parents. I am confused. Kindly help. Please teel the pros and cons of the approaches. I hope I can use your valuable suggestions. I know there is no "right" or "perfect" answer. Even a small point from you will make a difference. Thanks.

If you've graduated recently (past three years) you probly stil have access to your uni's career service, talk to them. Use your degree to get a job in the computer industry. once your "in" at a company, you'll then know who to go to yto listen to your ideas. If your software is that groundbreaking, talk to your uni about doing a masters/PhD and using this project as your thesis/dissertation. But its always gonna be one of those "you gotta make the decision" things! Good luck, whatever you do

Here is something to think about; if the companies you have approached don't see anything that is even potentially profitable in your software, if you continue to spend time further developing it, then how are you going to make enough profit from selling it to support your family? Most companies are only able to remain alive because they make money. No matter how useful it is they aren't going to be interested if they don't feel they can make money from it. Have you researched software that does essentially the same thing as your software? I think I would opt for the Post graduate Computer Science Program, not because it would give you credentials to be listened to about your software, but because of your love of computers. Besides you might be able to use your software as a project in one of your classes, or learn more ways to improve your program, and or consult one on your teachers about your program. You could support your family in the same manner as when you were studying for your Mechanical Engineering Degree. Or you could go to work at a software company and take classes at night if they are offered in your country. Good Luck in making your decision!

Hey, you are saying you already a mechanical engineer. I guess you can attend interviews normally and there are many people not from the Computer stream but good Computer jobs. All you have to do is prepare C/C++/Java thoroughly and attend the interviews. If you need help in this, you can join some courses too which help you get some grip in programming.
