How to change language in Ubuntu 10.04?

Novice Linux user with basic questions?

  • I received an Asus Eee Netbook as a gift. It came preloaded with Linux and Ubuntu. I know nothing about these and none of the online resources direct me to where I want to go. 1. What is the equivalent of the Windows Control Panel? I need to change user settings, change the sleep/hibernate settings, etc. Right now, the computer goes to sleep after five minutes and requires my password in order to wake it up. I'd *really* like to change this! 2. When I tried to look up how to change the user settings, I kept finding instructions to do something with programming language. Really? I have absolutely NO idea how to even get to a place where I can program anything on this computer. 3. I really want user friendly instructions. While I don't consider myself tech-savvy, nor do I consider myself to be technically challenged to the nth degree. 4. I want to support Linux because of its basic principles, but if I can't find a way to get this computer set up to my likings, then I may have to abandon it. Please help! Thank you!

  • Answer:

What version are you using? If you have a global applications menu there should be a settings or administration menu. If not hit the Alt key, and either type in the name of the program your looking for, say "power" for power management, "user for chaining user settings" or click the application tab, and then look under the system or settings sub-menu The screensaver setting menu should have a checkbox as to weather you want to lock the screen or not, or set it to a longer period of time.

Answers: 1. Go to System at the top and come down to Preferences (assuming you are using Gnome). You should see Power Management in here. 2. What you are talking about here is probably the console. You shouldn't need this for basic tasks, a UI alternative should be available. 3. There are user friendly tutorials out there, get googling! 4. Give it more time. Once you get these basic settings sorted you will learn to love Linux.

It all depends on the individual. I still remember my 1st year graduation days where we are asked to work in CUI. No windows at all. After all, Windows are available first in Unix as X windows. Before that Mac was ruling because of its easyness. Neverthless to say that it depends on individual. Only problem with the Linux is that it is not penetrated into home market compared to MS Windows. So, you may be getting feeling like this.
